The Family Binder: Organizing Your Final Wishes

February 21, 2018 Posted by Kelly Sturmthal, Esq. Durable Power Of Attorney, Estate Planning, Last Will and Testament No Comments

February is a time for telling others how much we care. The team at DSM Law would like to take this opportunity to “Thank You” for being our client.

This month, protect the ones you love by storing critical documents and organizing your final wishes in the DSM Law Family Binder. The binder is a need-to-know resource that provides your family with necessary details in the event of your passing, simplifying the process during a difficult time.

A Journal of Love

Leave behind lovely handwritten notes telling family and friends how special they are and how much they mean to you. Little gifts not recorded in your Last Will and Testament can be gifted with a note in the family binder.

Moments of Joy

We all have our favorite images that make us smile: a special birthday, an exciting vacation, holidays and baby pictures; an emotional moment from acting goofy and laughing hard, to tender moments filled with love. Give insight into your life with a collage of pictures.

My Favorite Song

You may not want to think about your own service, but you know best about your desired arrangements. If a Celebration of Life is envisioned, your binder will make it easy for your family to plan according to your wishes. Write down your favorite music and movies, cherished belongings, favorite sayings, guilty food pleasures, and sentimental memorabilia. Share a little piece of yourself.

Legal Documents

Last Will and Testament, power of attorney, tax return, and bank statements. Any legal documents important to your heirs should be included in your binder. We also recommend two separate lists of phone numbers. The first is professional contacts such as your financial advisor or attorney. The second is a personal list to ensure those you care about are notified.

We can provide additional insight into what else you might include. For other ideas, you may enjoy reading “Estate Planning; Your Letter of Final Wishes”, published by Forbes Magazine.

We believe our job is to provide you with exceptional resources, information, and documents for estate planning and business planning goals. We are here to assist you in ensuring the necessary papers are in place to protect you and provide peace of mind to your family.

Warmest Wishes this Valentine season.
